The Capitol
Last week I had the opportunity to follow Representative Alford from our District here in SW Kansas. According to him, and other House and Senate members, this is going to be one of the toughest sessions in the history of Kansas. My goal is to help open the communication lines between Topeka and our District. It is important for us to fully understand decisions impacting our area that are made at the Capitol. Some of these include education, property tax, and water. Stay tuned or more......

Fitness
The focus this week is on fitness in SW Kansas. The Grant County Rec Commission offers countless activities for people of all ages. For the winter season, the young can participate in wrestling, swim team, biddy basketball, and gymnastics. Adults can drop in for an early morning exercise class or attend the fitness center as it fits their schedule. Additionally, the Ulysses Tigers basketball team plays this Colby this Friday and has dubbed the game "Pink Out". Fans can purchase pink shirts and participate in a silent auction. A Survivor Ceremony will be held between games. So, regardless the weather you can get out there and get active in SW Kansas!

Pageant to be held.....
The Miss Southwest Kansas and Miss Santa Fe Trail Pageant is going on this weekend in Ulysses. I had the opportunity to meet some of these ladies this morning and they are an outstanding group. Each had a platform that they are presenting and I was impressed with the issues they selected - these are some outgoing ladies! Additionally, this pageant awards more scholarships than many across the state. The top award is $1500 for Miss Southwest Kansas and $1200 for Miss Santa Fe Trail. Runner-ups are awarded smaller scholarship as well. If you are out in the area, come join in the fun on Saturday night at 7 pm. http://www.misskansas.org/

Grant County Cloverbuds
Not your ordinary Show-N-Tell! Tonight we shared about special family traditions, members, and trips all while fine tuning our public speaking skills.
Kickin off 2012 with Grant County Cloverbuds; a 4-H group for 5 and 6 year olds. Last fall we focused on community services and helped fill the shelves at the local food pantry and made Christmas Crafts with the elderly at the Adult Care Home. Tonight we did some brainstroming for projects in 2012 including a continued relationship with our pals at the Adult Care Home, clean-up of a local park this spring, taking care of a small plot in the community gardens through the summer, and visiting the local animal shelter. We have big things on the horizon! Grant County also has two 4-H clubs for the older kids that are very active throughout the year.
